Standing-seam metal and architectural asphalt shingles are the two roofing systems we install most. They're very different in cost and lifespan, and many homes, like the craftsman pictured above, use both.
Architectural asphalt shingles
Dimensional shingles are the most common roof in Wisconsin for good reason. They look great, come in many colors, install quickly, and cost the least up front. With proper ice and water protection and ventilation, a quality shingle roof gives you many years of service.
Standing-seam metal
Standing-seam metal uses long panels with raised seams and hidden fasteners. It sheds snow and ice well, resists wind, and lasts much longer than shingles. The trade-off is a significantly higher upfront cost.

The best of both
A popular approach is a shingle main roof with metal on porches, bay windows, entries, and lower roof sections. You get the look and durability of metal where it shows most without paying for metal across the whole roof.

Questions to ask yourself
- How long do I plan to stay in this home?
- Is snow sliding off the roof a plus or a concern near walkways?
- Do I want the look of metal on the whole roof or just accents?
- What is my budget for this project now versus over the long run?
