Most roofs don't fail overnight. They give warning signs for years. Here's what to watch for, most of which you can check from the ground or the attic.
1. Curling or cupped shingles
Shingle edges that curl up or centers that cup down are a sign the shingles are drying out and nearing the end of their life.
2. Missing or cracked shingles
A few missing shingles after a storm can often be repaired. Widespread cracking or repeated loss usually means the roof is ready to be replaced.

3. Granules in the gutters
Shingles shed granules as they age. Heavy buildup in gutters or at downspouts is a sign of worn shingles.
4. Stains on ceilings or in the attic
Water stains, damp insulation, or daylight through the roof boards in the attic all point to leaks that need attention.
5. Sagging roof lines
A roof that dips or sags can mean water has damaged the roof deck. Have it looked at soon.
6. Ice dams every winter
Repeated ice dams often point to ventilation or insulation problems. A new roof is a good time to fix ice and water protection and attic airflow together.
7. Age
If your roof is nearing the end of the expected life for its material, it's worth getting an inspection and an estimate before problems start.
